Anyone got any mints?
A small town in Colorado doesn’t know what’s hit it when a scouting ship literally hits it and annoyingly unleashes not only a couple of little alien blighters but the most terrifying hybrid of all - no not TomKat - PredAlien! Cue mass panic and futile attempt to save humankind. Neeeever gonna happen, never gonna happen.
When Ridley Scott’s released his sci-fi horror Alien in 1979, it was an instant hit and spawned (excuse the pun) many a sequel, video game and cuddly toy (it’s true!). With alien designs based on the freaky art of H.R. Giger, some awesome blood and guts effects and Sigourney Weaver in those teeny weeny knickers, careers were launched and a franchise was born.
Aliens (that’s alien plural! Eek!) was born in 1986 c/o James Cameron and saw the motherly, nurturing side of Sigourney Weaver’s character as she took Newt under her wing. Who said bingo at the back?
Alien 3 came in 1992 with a skin head, hard nut Ripley who’s more than a little cheesed off when she wakes up to discover that her escape pod has crash landed on a planet of prisoners - Alcatraz in space - and the alien has followed her. *Sigh* Not again!
And just when you thought they'd let sleeping aliens lie, five years later Delicatessen director Jean-Pierre Jeunet brought us Alien: Resurrection, with Weaver back as ‘Ripley’ and Winona Ryder as, well, Winona Ryder.
Predator first arrived on the silver screen in 1987.
Starring muscle-bound Arnold Schwarzenegger who, fresh from the success of The Terminator, was still barely able to speak a word of English. But what use is the English language when you’re facing an invisible alien who’s picking off your commandos in the middle of the jungle? Arnie finds a nice mud mask far more useful.
Three years later Predator returned with the imiginitively titled Predator 2 and as with many a sequel they relocated to the city - in this case Los Angeles.
This was the last we saw of the ugly mo-fo aliens until 2004 when the pair appeared in the film that comic book/video gaming types had dreamt about since childhood, Alien vs Predator, commonly known as AVP.
And now of course we have Alien vs Predator - Requiem. Check out the trailer here...
Whose side are you on? If you're one of those Facebook kids, click here to vote for the Predator and here for the Alien. Oooh, it's like the local elections all over again.
